2022 Toyota BZ4X: price and specs for this brand new electric SUV

Presenting the 2022 Toyota BZ4X

Toyota and electric vehicles go way back. In fact, the Prius has been part of the Toyota family since 1997 and since then, several hybrid and plug-in hybrid models have joined the club.

Now, with the brand new 2022 Toyota BZ4X (which price has yet has to be announced), the manufacturer presents its very first 100% electric vehicle. Even if we don’t know all of its features quite yet, with all the information we have been given, one thing is for sure: this 2022 electric Toyota model will definitely knock our socks off!

While awaiting its arrival in dealership, Toyota Sherbrooke, close to Magog, gives you all of the latest available information about this new vehicle, which will surely be one of the best electric SUVs on the market!

The first of many 100% electric vehicles

The Toyota BZ4X is the very first Toyota to rely on the new e-TNGA platform which, from here to 2025, will be used on several other electric models. This new Toyota SUV will provide you with solid performance, great autonomy and loads of added technologies, on top of the reliability and quality you have come to expect from Toyota.

Yes, when it comes to electric Toyota vehicles, the future will definitely be bright!

Design and dimensions

The BZ4X is 4,690 millimetres long, 1,860 millimeters wide and 1,650 millimeters high; this would situate it between the RAV4 (4,596/1,854/1,702 mm) and the Venza (4,740/1,854/1,674 mm).

However, this electric Toyota SUV offers a very generous 2,850 mm wheel base, which is equal to that of the Toyota Highlander, and thus significantly more than the RAV4 and the Venza (2,690 mm). This also translates into more generous interior space for the BZ4X.

When it comes to design, this electric Toyota boasts sharp and bold lines that remind us of a hammerhead shark, with thin headlights, a stylised and muscular fascia, a sloping roof line as well as defined wheel arches.

Interior design

The first images of the interior show us a streamlined and modern design, with high-end fit and finishes. Moreover, we find a panoramic sunroof as well as a large tactile screen; we will come back to this.

Performance and autonomy

When it comes to performance, North-American numbers have yet to be made available; however, we know that the European versions give access to 204 and 218 horsepower and can tow up to 750 kg (1,650 pounds). Performance offered for the North-American market should reflect these numbers.

You will also have the option between a front wheel drive or all-wheel drive model, and autonomy is estimated at 400 kilometers, according to Toyota Canada. Moreover, the BZ4X can be charged on a 150 kW quick charging station (level 3) and reach 80% battery levels in about 30 minutes. Charging at home or on the road on a 240V charging station (level 2) will allow you to reach full charge in 10h45min, according to data available on the French Toyota website. Take note that North-American numbers could be slightly different.

Technologies and features

Like every Toyota vehicle, the new 2022 BZ4X will offer a long list of added technologies and safety features. It will be the very first Toyota to be equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 safety package, which offers the same safety features as the TSS 2.0, but improving upon the performance of each function. Amongst other things, you will find:

  • The precollision system, now offering a low-light cyclist detection, motorcyclist detection and Guardrail detection;
  • An improved lane recognition system;
  • A greater scope of detection for the millimeter-wave radar and the monocular camera;
  • Road Sign recognition;
  • Emergency driving assistance, warning other road users and immobilizing the vehicle should the driver lose consciousness;
  • etc.

Lastly, the 2022 Toyota BZ4X offers a luxurious interior where the driver takes center stage, and where technology is intuitive, like a multimedia interface that can be activated by voice, touch, and even sight.

There is also a large 8- or 12.3- inch tactile screen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Head-up display, navigation, one-pedal driving, and much more.

Finally, features related to comfort, like heated front seats, dual zone climate control and a driver’s seat with electric settings, should also be found aboard the North-American version of the BZ4X.

What about the competition?

Toyota sets the bar very high for other competing SUVs. Amongst competitors we will find the Mustang Mach-e, the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Kia EV6, to name just a few.

When is it expected to arrive in dealership?

Toyota expects the new BZ4X to be available by mid-2022. Pre orders are open on the European market, which is a sign that this long awaited model should be available very soon, to buyers everywhere in the world.
